German woman could face extradition over baby's death in Spain

A 20-year-old German woman has been arrested following claims that she was responsible for the death of her baby on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, prosecutors said Thursday.

The woman, who has not been named, could face extradition to Spain to answer allegations that the she left the dead baby in Majorca and returned to Germany.

The body was found in a ventilation shaft in the tourist town of El Arenal, Spanish police claim.

The woman, who was arrested in the German state of Lower Saxony and rejects the charges that she was responsible for the baby's death, has been held for two weeks.

German prosecutors said that the circumstances surrounding the baby's death remained unclear.

Berlin plans special honour for Bolt

The world championship host city of Berlin plans to honour Jamaican star sprinter Usain Bolt in a special way, the local government spokesman said on Thursday.

Bolt ran an astonishing 100 metres world record of 9.58 seconds on Sunday and was also tipped to win the 200m later Thursday, possibly in world record time again.

"We want to say thank you to Usain Bolt in a special way at the end of the worlds on Sunday. We have seen one of most outstanding achievements in athletics history from him which we want to honour with a special gesture," said spokesman Richard Meng.

The special gift which is yet to be determined is to be given to Bolt by mayor Klaus Wowereit.

Michael Jackson grants the custody of his estate to his mother, Katherine and his three children but excludes his father, according to the Wall street Journal.

However, pop star's family has not seen the document, the Journal said quoting family lawyer L Londell McMillan. "No will has been presented to the family or to us. We will review any will when we see it," McMillan said.

Jackson's former lawyer, John Branca has come out claiming that he has the will. Sources close to the SInger said that Branca may submit the will to the Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday.

The will names Branca who was Jackson's lawyer between 1980 and 2002 and veteran music executive John McLain as it's executors. Branca also claims that he was rehired by the singer just a week before his death.

The document has reportedly cut out Jackson's 80-year-old father, Joe Jackson, who shared an uneasy relationship with his legendary son. The 50-year-old star had a troubled childhood and had openly blamed his father for abusing him as a child.

The latest development is expected to cause further confusion over ownership of Jackson's property. According to the Journal, Jackson left a debt of USD 500 million but the value of his estate has been estimated at USD 700 million.

Meanwhile, Jackson's 79-year-old mother Katherine Jackson was granted temporary custody of her three grandchildren in a court hearing. The children will be under the care of Katherine till August 3, after which she will make her case to be their permanent guardian.

Jackson's mother also filed court papers here last night to take control of her son's estate. The pop star's ex-wife Debbie Rowe, the mother of his two elder children is also expected to claim custody of her children and there is also the possibility that the mother of Jackson's youngest child, Prince Michael II, may emerge to reclaim the boy. The identity of the surrogate mother of Jackson's third child remains a mystery till now.

The court paper's filed by Katherine list the children as living at the Jacksons' family compound in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. "They have a long established relationship with their paternal grandmother and are comfortable in her care," it claims.

But, speaking outside a music awards tribute in Los Angeles on Sunday, Joe Jackson had claimed that he was following his son's wishes. "We have the personal and legal authority to act, and solely Katherine and I have authority for our son and his children," he said.

Pop legend Michael Jackson, who died last week, was reading poetry by Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore during the last days of his life. He had also commissioned Oscar-winning music maestro A.R. Rahman to create a unity anthem for his new album.

Australian actor Hugh Jackman accidentally stabbed a stuntwoman in the arm while filming a fight scene for the first X-Men movie.

The Australian actor had to wear real metal talons while filming the 2000 comic book blockbuster and admits handling the prop was quite dangerous. Jackman recalls one incident which left Rebecca Romijn's stunt double seriously hurt - forcing makers to rethink how to film the scenes involving the superhero's famous claws.

"On the very first film we had real metal claws and the girl who was playing Mystique, Rebecca Romijn, her stunt double and I were doing a fight sequence in the Statue of Liberty. I went to stab her in the arm, which was part of the choreography, and she's meant to move her arm away and she forgot and the thing went right into her arm, like an inch".

Jackman said"I was stunned. It was one of those things, it was so deep, there was a hole, there was no blood coming out and then like a minute later, it was like a geyser. I didn't faint and I thought she was going to freak out, but she just said, 'Yes! I have been stabbed by Wolverine!'.

Jackman admits that subsequent efforts to prevent him using real metal claws were not particularly successful and even involved him using a fake limb with one arm tucked behind his back. The prop was only used in one scene before it was discarded.

Google launches video chat for Gmail

Google is rolling out video and voice capabilities for the chat function that is embedded in the Gmail interface. It's a bare-bones voice and video-conferencing service, but it's simple to install and use and is a very good addition to Gmail. Both video and voice chat needs a plug-in. The plug-in requires an Intel-based computer running Mac OS X or a computer running Windows XP or Vista, a Webcam, and/or a microphone. It works with browsers that support the current version of Gmail: Chrome, Firefox 2.0+, Internet Explorer 7.0, and Safari 3.0. No support for a Linux based plug-in as of yet.
I found a demo of voice and video quality on the service excellent, although to be fair I was connected from CNET's corporate network to someone at the Google campus. I do expect Gmail Video quality to be a bit more consistent than Skype, since unlike the point-to-point architecture of Skype, Gmail Video traffic all runs through Google servers. I expect that Google has the bandwidth and server capacity needed. But the service was a resource hog on my 2-year-old computer; it used up all my available CPU resources and made other apps slow to respond. I've had better luck with Skype. Newer computers would probably not have this problem. Unlike many current video chat products, Gmail Video and Voice uses a proprietary plug-in, not Flash. The small (2MB) download supports Firefox, IE, and Chrome on the PC, and Firefox on the Mac. Support for other browsers and platforms (Linux and mobile) may come later.

Gmail Video and Voice will be made available to all Gmail users starting Tuesday at noon PST. Global rollout should be complete by the end of the day. To see if you have it, open a chat with someone (you don't actually have to message them). If your account is video-enabled, at the lower left of the chat window, there will be an interface element labeled "Video & more." When you click on that it will walk you through installing the plug-in. If you want to make a video call to someone who hasn't yet installed the plug-in, you'll be able to invite them to do so. (In my early test of the service, this feature wasn't yet enabled).

Korea’s Next Generation Rifle With Laser Targeting And Exploding Rounds

Media appearances by North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il have been scarce over the last few months, perhaps because he has read the reports about South Korea’s new rifles. Key features of the rifle include laser targeting and rounds that can be programed to explode over enemies heads.

Laser Targeting + Optical Calculator

The rifle’s targeting system emits a laser beam that measures the distance between the solider and their target. An optical calculator indicated the target on screen, and the target distance is then ‘written’ to a 20mm explosive munition. When the trigger is pulled the munition round is fired and will explode on 3-4 meters above its target. The rounds are powerful enough to penetrate walls, and the explosion can be delayed until the round is inside a building.

Next Generation Rifle

The new rifles weigh 6.1kg and are 860 mm long. The exploding bullets have an range of 460-500 meters. The rifles have been specifically designed for urban combat, and the Agency for Defense Development, which has the ironic acronym ADD says the rifles will be ready for combat use in 2009. All that laser guided exploding goodness comes at a price though, the rifles have cost around 18.5 billion won (around $180 million USD) to develop, and each individual rifle costs 16 million won (around $12,000 USD). Due to the new rifles high cost each field unit squad will have two of the new rifles.

Although other countries such as the United States have the technology to develop these targeting systems and explosive rounds, Korea will be the first country to introduce the technology into active duty.

India’s first moon Craft

CHENNAI: While building India’s first moon craft, Chandrayaan project director Mylswamy Annadurai was reminded of his engineering college days wh

en he wrote lyrics to the tunes of his classmates.

At that time he used to write poetry - some were published in the college magazine.

“One of the many challenges in building the spacecraft is to accommodate the six overseas pre-built payloads. We had to design the spacecraft accordingly - sort of writing lyrics to a tune,” 50-year-old Annadurai told IANS from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, 80 km from here.

The man who will go down in space annals as the designer of India’s first moon orbiter was born in the small village of Kotavadi in Pollachi district of Tamil Nadu. He graduated from the Government College of Engineering, Coimbatore, and did his Masters at PSG College of Technology in the same city.

Now Annadurai is a veteran at the India Space Research Organisation (ISRO), having joined it in 1982.

“ISRO offers the good freedom even to freshers,” he said, citing his own experience when he suggested software modelling of ISRO satellites.

“It is something like a flight simulator. Operators can operate the computer-modelled satellites. Viewing the screen they can take corrective steps before a satellite is actually built and sent up,” he explained.

Over the years Annadurai has worked in different satellite projects - from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites 1A, 1B and communication satellites Insat 2A to 3E series.

He was mission director for the Insat 2C to 3E satellites and was associate project director for the country’s first education satellite Edusat before being assigned the prestigious Chandrayaan project in 2004.

“But Chandrayaan is not just another satellite,” Annadurai told IANS. “There were many new challenges in building it.”

The challenges started from the launch vehicle itself, as that is what determines the weight of the satellite.

Five years ago it was decided that Chandrayaan would be carried on a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

At that time PSLV was ISRO’s tried and tested rocket while its heavier Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) was still in its infancy.

PSLV can carry a payload of around 1,500 kg for geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).

So Annadurai and his team knew the maximum permissible weight of the satellite.

The thumb rule is that a rocket can carry around one percent of its total liftoff weight as luggage.

That was one boundary within which Annadurai had to work. The next was the communications challenge.

According to Annadurai, the Insat satellites cannot be put in lunar orbit.

“The communication to and from the satellite will be very difficult. The moon satellite will be orbiting at 3,86,000 km from the earth - over 10 times the distance at which communication satellites orbit.”

As a result ISRO’s satellite centre had to develop far more advanced communication sensors to receive and transmit signals.

Chandrayaan will be orbiting just 100 km above the lunar surface. So the extrme climate near the moon was another challenge that Annadurai’s team had to take into account.

“Communication satellites while in orbit are manoeuvred to maintain equilibrium between the hot and cold climes up above the earth,” he explained. “In a moon orbit the satellite will be exposed to high heat and thermally it needed a different design.”

Then there was the question matching the payloads the PSLV will carry in addition to the experimental instruments aboard Chandrayaan. They are from multiple sources - the US, different European countries and ISRO.

The spacecraft had to be designed for them. “In respect of one overseas instrument we had to come up with a slightly different design so that it would perform as expected,” Annadurai said.

Then, to reach the lunar orbit, the satellite’s propulsion system needs high-thrust engines.

While the on-board motors of Insat satellites are fired for a maximum of one week to lift it to the intended orbit around the earth, Chandrayaan will have to travel 18 days or more to reach the lunar orbit.

So the buzzword for Annadurai and his team was maximum possible miniaturisation of components to reduce weight.

The hyper spectral imager that will photograph the lunar surface has been reduced in size and weight, for instance. “The spin-off benefit will be that future satellites can carry smaller equipment,” Annadurai said.

The space bug obviously affects more than one member of the Annadurai family. His son is now studying aerospace engineering in Bangalore. “He is showing interest in space science but it’s too early to say whether he will follow his father’s footsteps.”

Annadurai hasn’t written a poem on Chandrayaan yet.

V.ANAND RETAINS THE WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand retained the World Chess Championship title in Bonn late on Wednesday night after ending the 11th game with Russias Vladimir Kramnik in a draw.

Anand had earlier won the Championship in 2000 and 2007.

Anand won three games, drew seven times and lost once en route to winning the competition by 6.5 points to 4.5.

With this win, he became the first player in chess history to have won the World Championship in three different formats: Knockout, Tournament and Match.

He will next defend his title in the World Chess Championship 2009 against the winner of the challenger match between Veselin Topalov and Gata Kamsky.

Anand is one of four players in history to break the 2800-mark on the FIDE rating list. He was on the top of the world-rating list five out of six times from April 2007 to July 2008. In October 2008, he dropped out of the world top 3 for the first time since July 1996.

The trials of the most keenly awaited Diwali release, Golmaal Returns, have started in Mumbai.

On Sunday evening, the producers, Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision, and the worldwide distributors, Indian Films - Studio 18 had an in-house trial, at which the response to the film was absolutely exemplary.

The other big show on Sunday evening was at Fun Republic, which was attended by Ajay Devgan, Kajol, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitly, Rohit Shetty, Manish Malhotra and their families. According to sources, the celebrities and their folk were seen laughing and clapping unstoppably, during the myriad comic sequences in the film.

The 52-hour countdown for Chandrayaan-1 — India’s first unmanned moon mission — will begin at Sriharikota spaceport early tomorrow for Wednesday’s historic launch.The integrated launch vehicle has already been moved into the second launch pad (umbilical tower) and launch rehearsals are underway, sources in India Space Research Organisation at Bangalore said.
“All the preparatory work is going as usual and the formal countdown would begin tomorrow morning about 0400 hrs,” Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) Associate Director Dr M Y S Prasad told PTI at Chennai.
“All the work including the checking of payloads went satisfactorily. The spacecraft launch would take place as per the schedule,” he said.
SDSC officials said if the weather turns out to be good, the PSLV-C11 would take off from the second launch pad on October 22, at 0620 hrs.
“After the rehearsals, we will make sure that everything is in place before the countdown,” they said.
Chandrayaan-1 is the first spacecraft mission of ISRO beyond Earth orbit. It would be followed by Chandrayaan-2 which features a lander and a rover. India and Russia would jointly participate in this project.
However, there might be a provision to accommodate payloads from other space agencies as happened in Chandrayaan-1.”This apart, studies are being conducted by ISRO on sending unmanned spacecraft to planet Mars as well as to asteroids and comets. Through such programmes, ISRO intends to undertake the exploration of space besides its primary mission of developing and utilising space technology for the overall development of the country”, officials of the Bangalore-headquartered agency said. Terror strikes Pakistan’s capital

After the Yemen attack, terrorists strike Islamabad.But this seems to be a massive attack.A suicide bomber with a truck full of explosives nearly one tonne triggered the bomd to explode near the Marriott hotel located at Islamabad in Pakistan.In this blast it’s been said officially that 50 people killed and more 100 were injured.The officials also feared that there may be many trapped inside the hellhole caused by the blast.The Marriott hotel which is a popular hotel in Islamabad have already subjected to two blasts earlier.But this is the most worst one.The place where the truck was detonated was completely wiped off causing a serious damage.Because of the massive blast a crater with 25 ft deep and 35 ft wide has been formed.The fire from the blast engulfed the whole Marroitt and led to complete destruction.The hotel is in such a bad condition that it may collapse at any moment.Army Engineers are working on that and rescuers are doing effective evacuation.Many were injuried and hospitalised.The blast occured after the first address of Pakistan President Zardari to parliament saying that the terrorism should be rooted out.The address took place 100 m away from the blast.There was a Ramazan feast going on the top of the hotel and because of this many were injured.Nations from Worldwide condemned the attack on Pakistan saying that the face of terrorism should be operated soon. The fact behind the evolution of universe is still a big question to everyone around the world.There were many theories saying that the formation of universe is all because of the large colllision between the protons.But no practical tests were made to prove this, since any fault in this may lead to big disaster to earth.Over two decades of research on this and the 10 billion dollar project was set to ready on September 10 at Geneva.The Large Hardron Collider was turned on the same day and the process started.Though there were many qualms on this research that, the research may lead to the formation of black hole , if it is a failure one.But it has been cleared by the scientists that there will not be any harm to earth because of this project.So from september 10 the LHC was turned on , Suddenly now due to some technical reasons,the whole operation is halted.The reson behind this is the fault connection between the two magnets and it stopped super conducting, melted and led to a mechanical failure and let out the helium out.This problem is worse than initially thought by the scientists.The repairing process of this is a large one and it may take several months to resume,according to scientists. A number of magnets has to be raised their temperature by 100 degrees and the whole sector should be warmed up.Mr.Gillies the head of this project said that “When they happen in our other accelerators,its a matter of couple of days to fix them..But because this is a superconducting machine and you have got long warm up and cooldown periods,it means we are going to be off for couple of months”he said. Since there are several process to repair, the resumption of the LHC will take a longer time.Lets hope the best to happen, and a very all the best to the scientists who are all involved in this project.

NEW DELHI: Terror returned to Delhi a fortnight after the serial blasts with two motorcycle-borne youth dropping a tiffin bomb in a crowded south Delhi market that exploded killing a young boy and injuring 18 people.

Riding a black motorcycle, the two men in black dress and wearing helmets, dropped a black polythene bag containing a tiffin box opposite an electronic goods shop in the flower market in Mehrauli at about 2.15 pm, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H S Dhaliwal told reporters.

A 13-year-old boy picked it up to give it back to the bikers. They refused and fled the place but the boy was still keen on giving it to them when it exploded killing him instantaneously and injuring 18 people.

Eleven of the injured were rushed to AIIMS where doctors said six were in critical condition. Five of them suffered serious head injuries. Three or four of the injured could be required to be operated upon, Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta told reporters.

The explosive shattered the window panes of several adjacent shops in the market located close to the historic Qutab Minar, which was bustling with shoppers.

The blast, which caused a crater, left a gory scene where blood was splattered on the road along with shattered glass panes and furniture.

Soon after the explosion, Home Minister Shivraj Patil reviewed the situation with top officials of his ministry. Gupta, who talked to Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal, briefed Patil on the situation.

The nature of the explosives used in today’s blast was not immediately known. Forensic experts of the NSG bomb data squad, who visited the spot, found the nails in the explosives were sharpened on both sides.

Immediately after the explosion, shopkeepers and shoppers rushed to help the injured people and took them to nearby hospitals.

“There was a huge sound. I came out of my shop and saw some people were injured and screaming for help,” a shopkeeper said.

People in the area displayed their anger by alleging that police came late despite being called several times. “Police were nowhere to be seen till one hour after the incident. We took the injured to the hospital,” a shopkeeper, who was injured in the incident, said.

Police have cordoned off the area and senior police officials have rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Santosh Kumar (13), who fell victim to the low-intensity bomb was trying to return the packet of the two motorcycle-borne youth.

Little Kumar did, hailing from Bihar, know that he was trying to return the bomb, which the duo had deliberately dropped.

The last words heard by eyewitnesses and his relations were Kumar saying, “bhai saab, aapka packet gir gaya hai (brother, your packet has fallen).”

“Everything happened so suddenly. Thick smoke came out instantly and there was a bang. My nephew was in blood,” recounts his maternal uncle Fantoosh, a snacks vendor selling omelets and boiled eggs.

Santosh was sent by his maternal uncle to fetch a crate of eggs when the incident happened.

His grandmother, Rekha, was wailing for Kumar who was declared brought dead by the Hospital authorities.

Bond actor Daniel Craig raised speculation he might be injured when he was spotted with a sling in London.

According to thesun.co.uk, Craig had suffered an arm injury and was seen wearing a cast with a sling. He was walking around London in a baseball cap.

Earlier Craig, 40, disappointed female fans by saying that he won’t be filmed wearing skimpy swimming trunks again.

He continued his relationship with the BBC by starring in the 1997 Francis Bacon biopic Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon, portraying Bacon's jilted lover George Dyer. In the latter movie, Craig agreed to be shot in the nude, including full-frontals.

Following an introduction to international audiences as Angelina Jolie's rival and love interest in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), he continued his career in the United States in Sam Mendes's movie Road to Perdition (2002), with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. Craig played Connor Rooney, the son of an Irish mob boss (played by Newman) and a conniving murderer who hides behind his mobster father's shadow. Other leading film roles include The Mother (2003) with Anne Reid, Layer Cake (2004) with Sienna Miller, Sword of Honour (2001), Sylvia (2003) with Gwyneth Paltrow, Enduring Love (2004) with Rhys Ifans, and Steven Spielberg's Munich (2005).

In 2006, after playing James Bond in Casino Royale (see below), Craig moved on to portraying the character of Lord Asriel in the forthcoming film adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass. Eva Green, who played Bond girl Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale will also star in the film. In a stage version of the book Asriel had previously been played by Timothy Dalton, one of Craig's predecessors in the role of James Bond.

As early as February 2005, Craig had been named in the media as a possible James Bond. On 6 April 2005, Craig was reported to have been signed by EON Productions as part of a three-film contract worth £15 million ($29,696,972), however this news was later debunked by the BBC, who contacted EON for an official report. According to Craig, MGM offered him the role but the Broccoli family never got in touch with him..

Finally, on 23 October 2005, Craig signed a three-film contract, with the first, Casino Royale, released on 14 November 2006. Craig is the first actor to step into the role who was born after the first Bond film, Dr. No, was released. Craig is also the first Bond to be hired after the death of Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli in 1996.

Craig's hiring as James Bond was controversial among some fans and critics, with some vocal fans threatening a boycott of the film and going so far as to set up a website because, unlike all his predecessors, Craig is blond and of average height. Media coverage of the controversy resulted in numerous actors publicly voicing their support of Craig. Most notably, four of the five previous actors who portrayed Bond—Timothy Dalton, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan—called his casting a good decision. Clive Owen, who had been linked to the role, also spoke in defense of Craig, as did co-star Judi Dench.

In an interview with The Globe and Mail, Brosnan was asked, "What do you think of the new James Bond, Daniel Craig, and will you be watching Casino Royale?" He replied, "I'm looking forward to it like we're all looking forward to it. Daniel Craig is a great actor, and he's going to do a fantastic job".

After the film was released, Craig's realistic and more humane portrayal of Bond, as well as his well-regarded acting abilities, received wide praise. Casino Royale received a "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an average score of 7.8/10. Of 193 reviews, 94% were positive. Several critics have said that Craig is the most believable and charismatic Bond since Sean Connery. Craig was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Actor on January 2006, and won the Best Actor award at the Evening Standard British Film Awards on 2 February 2007, both firsts for an actor in the role of James Bond.

As production of Casino Royale reached its conclusion, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli announced that pre-production work had already begun on the 22nd Bond film. After several months of speculation as to the release date, Wilson and Broccoli officially announced on 20 July 2006 that the currently un-named follow-up film, known only as Bond 22, will be released on 7 November 2008 and that Craig has been signed to play Bond, with an option for a third film. On October 25, 2007, MGM CEO Harry Sloan revealed at the Forbes Meet II Conference that Craig had signed on for four more Bond film

Internet search engine giant Google today launched a mapping tool called Google Map Maker in India, which was conceived and developed by its Indian engineering team.

This tool allows users to add or edit geographical features such as roads, businesses, parks, schools, apartment buildings and localities among others in the existing maps of their city, a company release said.

Users can also add detailed information about these locations and this user-created content is updated and made visible immediately to all other users, the release added. “This launch is the reinforcement of our commitment to bring more useful information to people around the world and especially to a hyper-growth country like India where maps are changing on a daily basis given the rapid of infrastructure development,” said Google Head, R&D, Prasad Ram.

Other than India, this product is available in 57 countries in Asia, the Island Nations, and the Caribbean.

The LHC experiments

The six experiments at the LHC are all run by international collaborations, bringing together scientists from institutes all over the world. Each experiment is distinct, characterised by its unique particle detector.

The two large experiments, ATLAS and CMS, are based on general-purpose detectors to analyse the myriad of particles produced by the collisions in the accelerator. They are designed to investigate the largest range of physics possible. Having two independently designed detectors is vital for cross-confirmation of any new discoveries made.

Two medium-size experiments, ALICE and LHCb, have specialised detectors for analysing the LHC collisions in relation to specific phenomena.

Two experiments, TOTEM and LHCf, are much smaller in size. They are designed to focus on ‘forward particles’ (protons or heavy ions). These are particles that just brush past each other as the beams collide, rather than meeting head-on

The ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb detectors are installed in four huge underground caverns located around the ring of the LHC. The detectors used by the TOTEM experiment are positioned near the CMS detector, whereas those used by LHCf are near the ATLAS detector.

We don't mean to beat a dead horse – both Fraser and Ian have already covered this topic quite thoroughly — but just in case anyone still has any fears about the Large Hadron Collider meaning the end of the world, a new report published today provides the most comprehensive evidence available to confirm that the LHC's switch-on, due on Wednesday next week, poses no threat to mankind. A copy of the report is available HERE. In a nutshell, it says nature's own cosmic rays regularly produce more powerful particle collisions than those planned within the LHC, and nothing bad has happened to Earth from those quite natural and frequent events. The LHC will be studying nature's laws in controlled experiments. So just relax and watch the LHC rap video.

The LHC Safety Assessment Group have reviewed and updated a study first completed in 2003, which dispels fears of universe-gobbling black holes and of other possibly dangerous new forms of matter, and confirms that the switch-on will be completely safe.

The report, 'Review of the Safety of LHC Collisions', published in IOP Publishing's Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics, proves that if particle collisions at the LHC had the power to destroy the Earth, we would never have been given the chance to exist, because regular interactions with more energetic cosmic rays would already have destroyed the Earth or other astronomical bodies.

The Safety Assessment Group compares the rates of cosmic rays that bombard Earth, other planets in our solar system, the Sun and all the other stars in our universe itself to show that hypothetical black holes or strangelets, that have raised fears in some, will in fact pose no threat.

The report also concludes that, since cosmic-ray collisions are more energetic than those in the LHC, but are incapable of producing vacuum bubbles or dangerous magnetic monopoles, we should not fear their creation by the LHC.

LHC collisions will differ from cosmic-ray collisions in that any exotic particles created will have lower velocities, but the Safety Assessment Group shows that even fast-moving black holes produced by cosmic rays would have stopped inside the Earth or other astronomical bodies. Their existence proves that any such black holes could not gobble matter at a risky rate.

As the Safety Assessment Group writes, "Each collision of a pair of protons in the LHC will release an amount of energy comparable to that of two colliding mosquitoes, so any black hole produced would be much smaller than those known to astrophysicists." They conclude that such microscopic black holes could not grow dangerously.

As for the equally hypothetical strangelets, the review uses recent experimental measurements at the Brookhaven National Laboratory's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, New York, to prove that they will not be produced during collisions in the LHC.

Abhinav Bindra won India's first ever individual Olympic gold medal on Monday with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the men's 10 metres air rifle event.

Bindra was fourth after qualifying but had a brilliant final round and even hit a near perfect 10.8 on his last visit to pull in front of Henri Hakkinen of Finland, who dropped to bronze with a poor final shot of 9.7.

That allowed China's Zhu Qinan, the defending Olympic champion and heavy favourite, to pass him on his final shot and win the silver medal.

Zhu suffered a late lapse in concentration in the qualification earlier on Monday morning when he had to rush his final shots to make the time limit, thus dropping to second place behind Hakkinen ahead of the final.

He was close to tears and said: "I was under tremendous pressure and at times I felt really agitated. But I tried my best."

India's last Olympic gold medal was from hockey at the 1980 Moscow Olympics . Bindra's feat betters the silver medal effort of double trap shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore at the Athens Games in 2004.

Randhir Singh, Indian Olympic Association secretary-general and former shooter who was present at the range, was stricken with nerves as the competition reached its climax.

"I haven't prayed so much in my life. With the second last shot they tied together and then he shot a 10.8. It couldn't have got better," he said.

Bindra won the 2006 World championships and finished seventh in Athens four years ago.

Abhinav Bindra is an Indian shooter specializing in the 10 m Air Rifle event. At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games and first gold medal since 1980 for India by winning the gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event.

Abhinav Bindra was the youngest Indian participant at the 2000 Olympic Games. He won six gold medals at various international meets in 2001. In the 10 m Air rifle event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Manchester, he won Gold in the Pairs event and Silver in the individual event. At the 2004 Olympic Games, he broke the Olympic record but failed to win a medal. He is a recipient of the Arjuna award in 2001 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for the year 2001-2002. Abhinav Bindra's potential talent was first spotted by his first coach Lt. Col. J.S. Dhillon.

Global warming

Global warming as most of us know is becoming a serious threat for the whole world. For those who don’t know what global warming is, here is just a brief explanation about it. But before going deep into what global warming is, you just have to know what green house effect is.

Many chemical compounds found in the Earth’s atmosphere act as “greenhouse gases.” These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely. When sunlight strikes the Earth’s surface, some of it is reflected back towards space as infrared radiation (heat). Greenhouse gases absorb this infrared radiation and trap the heat in the atmosphere. Over time, the amount of energy sent from the sun to the Earth’s surface should be about the same as the amount of energy radiated back into space, leaving the temperature of the Earth’s surface roughly constant. Many gases exhibit these “greenhouse” properties. Some of them occur in nature (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide), while others are exclusively human-made (like gases used for aerosols).This heating up of the earth’s atmosphere is essential to make the earth warm and livable. But the problem is this thin layer of green house gases is being thickened by global warming pollutants. This thickening of green house gas layer causes more outgoing infrared radiations to be trapped thereby increasing the average temperature of the earth. This is called Global Warming.

Oceans and seas are not exceptions from global warming. Ocean’s temperature also does get increased. Why am I emphasizing on ocean’s increase in temperature is, most of us don’t know the fact that warmer oceans causes more and stronger storms (this is the main reason for many hurricanes which recently hit United states of America such as Hurricane Katrina, Jeanne, Ivan, Frances, etc.) these are not only restricted to America but even Japan, Caribbean and Brazil are also victims of some hurricanes caused due to global warming.

A simple relation for global warming is, when there is more carbon di oxide in atmosphere, the earth’s temperature gets warmer because it traps more infrared radiations

Global warming increases evaporation from water bodies and sucks the water from bare land dramatically with increase in atmospheric temperature. Lake Chad in Africa, one of the largest lakes in the world few decades back has now almost dried to nothing. One of the main reasons for this is Global warming.

Another shocking fact is that the arctic ice caps are melting drastically due to global warming. Nearly 40% of the thickness for arctic ice caps has melted in the last four decades and major studies show that in another 60 to 70 years the arctic ice will melt completely in summer. You may now ask two questions 1. How does such a huge ice melt so quickly within 60 to 70 years.?? 2. Why should we bother about arctic ices?? Here it is for the first question. The ocean currents and the wind currents help in distributing the heat from equator to the arctic ice cap thereby keeping the earth’s temperature warm. Ice caps normally reflect 90% of the sun’s radiation and absorb only 10% of the heat. Whereas water absorbs 90% of sun’s radiation and reflects only 10% of heat. So as the surrounding water gets warmer it speeds up the melting of ice. If this happens, the giant mirror gets completely vanished which then will not be there to keep the earth warmer.

Green land ice is also melting fast and nearly half of Greenland is expected to melt soon if this situation prevails further. If green land broke up and melted or half of Greenland and half of arctic ice cap break and melt then the average sea level gets increased which can cause drowning of most parts of many countries in world. Some countries which are expected to be affected are San Francisco, Florida, Netherlands, Beijing, Shanghai, East Bangladesh and West Bengal. There will not be any surprise if this happens in the next 50 year period.

Carbon emission per person in different countries vary. United States of America tops the list with 5.6 tons of carbon emission per person per year followed by Russia, Europe and Japan with 2.72, 2.4 and 2.4 respectively. India is at 6th position with 0.25 tons of carbon emission/person/year.

Carbon emission per country is also measured which says U.S tops the list with 5.47 Billion metric tons of carbon emission/ year followed by Europe, China and Russia with 3.25, 2.89 and 1.42 Billion metric tons. India stands 6th here too with 0.91 billion metric tons.

Its time to wake up. After analysing all the facts its still not fair to keep us from taking any preventive measures. For this purpose only Kyoto protocol has been introduced.

The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol to the international Framework Convention on Climate Change with the objective of reducing greenhouse gases that cause climate change.

It was adopted on 11 December 1997 by the 3rd Conference of the Parties, which was meeting in Kyoto, and it entered into force on 16 February 2005. As of June 2008, 182 parties have ratified the protocol. Of these, 36 developed cg are required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the levels specified for each of them in the treaty with three more countries intending to participate. One hundred and thirty-seven (137) developing countries have ratified the protocol, including Brazil, China and India, but have no obligation beyond monitoring and reporting emissions. The United States has not ratified the treaty yet.

It’s high time to take some actions to reduce the carbon emission and fight for our earth against global warming.

If u can buy a hybrid car.. When you can walk or ride a bicycle.. Where u can use light rail and mass transit

Tell your parents not to ruin the world that you will live in

Switch to renewable sources of energy

Call your power company to see if they offer green energy, if they don’t ask them why not.

Vote for leaders who pledge to solve this crisis.
