German woman could face extradition over baby's death in Spain

A 20-year-old German woman has been arrested following claims that she was responsible for the death of her baby on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, prosecutors said Thursday.

The woman, who has not been named, could face extradition to Spain to answer allegations that the she left the dead baby in Majorca and returned to Germany.

The body was found in a ventilation shaft in the tourist town of El Arenal, Spanish police claim.

The woman, who was arrested in the German state of Lower Saxony and rejects the charges that she was responsible for the baby's death, has been held for two weeks.

German prosecutors said that the circumstances surrounding the baby's death remained unclear.
